Wóma is the alias of English composer Arran Poole. As Wóma, Arran is particularly interested in ‘primeval’ sound; sound that’s evocative of primitive artistic practices and languages, and that largely disregards the established rules of contemporary music. Arran’s instrument of choice is an unusual noise-making device; a part-instrument, part-sculpture called a ‘bow chime’. He adopted this instrument around 15 years ago after seeing a performance by its inventor, Robert Rutman and other practitioners in Coventry. The bow chime itself comprises a large stainless steel sheet, attached to which are a series of tuned rods. When bowed, the instrument produces deep, thunderous resonances and guttural, growly utterances.
